Michelangelo International Wine Awards
This well-established event was first staged in 1997 and has become one of South Africa’s most prestigious and sought-after awards. Selections are made by a combination of local and international judges.
The Michelangelo International Wine Awards make use of the 100-point system. Only the top 30% of entries are eligible for medals. Grand D’Or (96+) Gold (92-96) Silver (86-91)
Veritas
Hosted by the South African National Wine Show Association, the distinctive Veritas symbol of excellence serves as an authoritative quality guide for wine connoisseurs. The Veritas awards are South Africa’s largest competition for market-ready wines.
Judges rate categories based on colour or style of wine and make use of a 20-point system. In order to win an award, a wine needs to score 15 or above. Scoring works as follows: Double Gold (17+) Gold (17) Silver (16) Bronze (15)
The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show
Previously known as the Fairbairn Capital Trophy Wine Show, the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show is a national wine competition which seeks to identify South Africa’s top wines. The chairperson is none other than Michael Fridjhon, one of South Africa’s most respected wine connoisseurs.
The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show makes use of the 100-point scoring system to produce a consensus-driven result. Gold (90+) Silver (80-89) Bronze (70-79)
The Platter Ratings
The Platter wine ratings are derived from the John Platter South African Wine Guide. Published annually, it’s the most comprehensive, up-to-date and authoritative chronicle of who’s who and what’s what in the South African wine industry.
