Fruit and caramel flavours initially emerge, followed by smoky undertones and a lively bitterness. Extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage were formerly needed to preserve the beer so that it could survive and thrive on lengthy sea voyages, but now they give it its powerful flavour and distinct character.
In the glass, a deep dark liquid with a frothy foam. A powerful scent emerges, with distinct fruity and coffee notes. A full-bodied palate with a roasted, fruity flavour that gives it a tingling effect. It is bittersweet with a dry finish. It is great when served chilled.
