Made from fermented fresh milk product this Maas, also known as amasi, is delicious poured over cooled mielie meal porridge. Tasting a bit like cottage cheese or a thick plain yoghurt, this rich and creamy maas is a staple in many South African homes.
A popular ingredient for adding that extra depth of flavour to scones, this fermented milk product is also a popular addition to cooled and crumbly maize meal porridge. Known as amasi in Zulu and Xhosa, maas in Afrikaans and mafi in Sesotho, it tastes similar to cottage cheese and is a popular snack among the people of South Africa and its neighbouring countries.
