Welmoed opens newly renovated restaurant: Bistro 13

When hearing the name Nic van Wyk, my head just swims with glorious food images. A talented chef whom my hubby and I have followed around Cape Town for some time. Some highlights of his journey would include how he began his career as the La Colombe’s sous chef, was lured to Kleine Zalze in Stellenbosch with chef Michael Broughton as his business partner to open Terroir restaurant, and most recently was chef at Diemersdal Farm Eatery on the eponymous wines estate, and made his television debut as a co-judge in Kokkedoor, a Kyknet reality food series. Nic’s role on the programme showcased what he is known for: bold and traditional flavours, presented in a way that makes them new, whether it be adding a new element, or changing an already expected one.

Where to from here you may ask? Well, good news for Stellenbosch and wine estate excursionists. Nic, in collaboration with Stellenbosch Vineyards, has opened Bistro 13. The newly renovated restaurant on Welmoed Wine Farm, home of the Stellenbosch Vineyards’ stable of wines, will add a dining attraction for visitors and service the new tasting room with platters.
The opening of Bistro 13 signifies Nic’s return to Stellenbosch, and more importantly, to the kitchen. “I’ve been itching to get back into the kitchen, and what better time to do it than when you can be involved in building your dream restaurant space?” says Nic, who has been part of the project from when the blue prints were drawn up.
Bistro 13 gets its name from the moment Nic van Wyk set his desires on cooking. A Van Wyk family tradition was that at every 13th birthday, the family member celebrating this milestone would choose any restaurant they wanted to eat at, a moment Nic remembers fondly. Thirteen also happens to be his lucky number and his birthday.
The look and feel of the 65-seater restaurant is elegant yet understated, with comfortable warmth, detected in the use of wood and Nguni skins that add texture and character to the space. Bistro 13’s indoor fireplace and large wooden deck outside make it perfect for guests to visit the winelands during all seasons, so be sure to add it to your culinary experience list for breakfast, lunch or supper.

Or, you can use Nic as your inspiration and dream up your own recipes whilst sipping on a range of Welmoed wines, such as their Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage or Merlot – stocked at your nearest Checkers store!
