Directions

1. Combine wine, brandy, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, star anise and sweetener in a large saucepan. Stir briefly.

2. Simmer on medium-high heat until it reaches a gentle simmer. Avoid boiling. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 15 minutes to 3 hours.

3. Strain the mulled wine using a fine mesh strainer to remove orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Taste and add more sweetener if desired.

4. Serve warm in heatproof mugs, garnished to your preference.

Ingredients

  • 1 (750ml) bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon
  • ¼ (59ml) cup brandy
  • 1 orange; sliced into rounds (also peeled, if you would like a less bitter drink)
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 2–4 tbsp. sugar, honey, or maple syrup to taste (or your desired sweetener)
  • Optional garnishes: Citrus slices (orange, lemon and/or lime), extra cinnamon sticks, extra star anise
