Our blogger attends our Wines of the World event
I recently attended a very elegant function hosted by Checkers at Signature Restaurant in Morningside, Gauteng. The aim of the event was to create more awareness and familiarity of their Wines of the World brand with the media and wine specialists, and WOW, they did exactly that! Not only was the room abuzz, but also social media networks were jammed with feedback from those tasting and interest and enquiries from those following.
The search for these Wines of the World began as a concept about five years ago spearheaded by the wine buyer, Stephanus Eksteen from the Shoprite Group, and local wine guru, Michael Fridjhon, who was brought in as a consultant to head up the tasting panel. The Checkers wine-buying team has worked meticulously at growing the collection with world-class examples from international wineries. Over 5 000 wines have been tasted in their valiant effort to find wines, literally from across the world, at affordable prices for their Checkers consumer.
We literally got to ‘Taste the World’ at this event with a wine to showcase each of the countries which are represented in their line-up. Currently offering over 50 international wines from 9 of the world’s best wine-producing countries, Checkers remains committed to bringing its customers wines of the very best quality. The Wines of the World collection includes wines from Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain.
One of the highlights of the day was the announcement that this year, the 10th country is making its debut, in the form of Romania. The Lautarul Pinot Noir from the Dealul Uberland vineyard now forms part of the exclusive collection and is available in-store.
Checkers believes in supporting local wineries and knows that traditionally, South Africans by far prefer local wines. The Wines of the World collection however provides customers with the opportunity to expand their knowledge by tasting and experiencing styles and attributes of wines from different countries. Whether you are looking for a crisp Portuguese Vinho Verde, an exquisite French Bordeaux blend or an enticing Argentinian Malbec you will find them all, and more, at the Checkers Wine Route. The Wines of the World collection is an adventure of taste and global distinction, and truly expresses its place of origin.
It is quite evident that Checkers has reinvented the supermarket wine experience, bringing the top estates to your home – and all at affordable prices!
